I missed posting some of these last week while I was on an Alaskan cruise but they’re all worth checking out:
Where Did She Go – Harper Finn
Harper Finn is a singer/songwriter from New Zealand. His last name may be recognizable as he is the son of Tim Finn who, along with his brother Neil, was a founding member of the 80s band Split Enz. They were also part of Crowded House. Harper began his recording career in 2018. His latest single, Where Did She Go, is a bouncy, catchy number about losing track of a girl and it satisfyingly doesn’t stray far from the sound his father and uncle made famous.
Burning Daylight – Young Gun Silver Fox
This is the third track that has grabbed me from Young Gun Silver Fox’s latest album Pleasure. The band continues to embrace the sound of late 70s yacht rock with this one. Remember Ambrosia? I hear them here in this smooth r&b, midtempo song that calls for kicking back after a long day as I did last week while cruising the Alaska shoreline.
Ain’t No Turnin’ Back – MY BABY
MY BABY hails from New Zealand and Amsterdam. They’ve been around since 2012 and describe their sound as “Psychedelic Blues Dance,” which is a pretty interesting combination that you will likely hear on this track. I felt the energy of this one during a day at sea on the Celebrity Edge. It gave my workouts a much-needed push!
Red Mountain Blues – Palace Winter
The third track I’m highlighting from the band’s current album Confessions of Mr. Nowhere has a cool vibe about a “dreamer sleeping through the storm.” There’s some gender bending within the lyrics that might require more probing but I dig what these guys are doing sonically throughout this album.
Dreaming – The Ting Tings
The Ting Tings have been around since 2007. They’re an English indie pop duo who will be releasing their first long-play album in six years, entitled Home, on June 6th. According to Femmusic.com the new songs are inspired by the 1970s sounds of Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, Joni Mitchell and the Eagles. Sounds great to me! This single definitely fits that mold.
Television – Blossoms
Another English band that has been releasing some great indie rock music since 2013 is Blossoms. In September, 2024 they released the album Gary, followed by an album of covers in December. Their latest song, Television, is from their recent Gary (Deluxe) release, which, frankly, is a whole new album. This tune is about (what else?) but wasting time watching television and “Larry David’s eyes.” (Now, THAT could be a whole other song…!) Television is never a waste unless you are “tuned in but zoned out.”

Which of these songs stand out to you?
I like Burning the daylight and a number of YGSF other songs you have highlighted
I forgot about The Ting Tings. Played them a lot around 2009.
Harper Finn sounds a lot like his dad.
