Picking up the tempo from my last few song choices here are two new energetic songs to enjoy in the hot summer:
Touch Myself – The Beaches
Could it get any more summer than with a band called The Beaches? I first encountered this all female Canadian group two years ago with the release of Blame My Ex. Two of the songs from that great, rocking album made my Top Ten of the year: Shower Beer (my number one of 2023) and Everything is Boring (#4.) This new song is from their upcoming No Hard Feelings album. Several of the other tracks have already been released including Takes One to Know One which dropped last year. Touch Myself is my favorite of all the others I’ve heard so far. It features the band’s highly melodic sound with catchy, provocative lyrics. The Beaches know how to create hooks which fall right into my pop leaning ears.
I CARE – Turnstile
My buddy Jeff turned me on to this one when he featured it in his Top Ten of June (yes, we create such lists each month.) I’m new to the band Turnstile (who’s name I love because it reminds of the Turns-Style department store I went to as a kid to pick up the latest WCFL radio surveys.) They are from Baltimore, Maryland and are billed as a hardcore punk band. Listening to its latest album NEVER ENOUGH, that label is pretty accurate. I CARE feels very much in the vein of early music by The Police though. Lead singer Brendan Yates even channels the sound of Sting’s voice from that era. That’s probably what attracted me most to the song. It’s also a very catchy, uptempo, pop/rock track about a broken heart.
Link to my 2025 playlist is here!
What do you think? Are you familiar with or fans of either of these bands?
I love Beaches! I didn’t know they had a new single out, it sounds great!
Enjoyed the Turnstile track too!
Hey, thanks for the shout out this week :-) really love that Turnstile’s record. Remember when we were kids here in Chicago they used to be a big box store named TurnStyle? https://www.pinterest.com/pin/turnstyle-department-store-at-harlem-foster-in-chicago--239605642649124583/
