My Number 6 song of 2024 is…
Lost in Space - Foster the People
Those that have been following my annual Top Tens from recent years will note that Foster the People have been a staple in my lists for over ten years. (Although not, ironically with their biggest hit, Pumped Up Kicks.) Their 2024 album Paradise State of Mind was a big disappointment for me. Lost in Space was the first single release and it grabbed me quickly with its disco-tinged sound and beat. None of the other songs on the album did much for me but this one I found endlessly catchy (a common theme for songs to make my Top Ten!) This one could have been played on the dance floors during the disco era with its pounding beat and string section. Plus, how could one not relate to the universal emotion of feeling lost when a loved one is gone? I love the energy of the production and the video is not bad either!
Number 6 songs of 2024 from other contributors:
Kevin Alexander - On Repeat Records:
“Winged Wheel- Sleeptraining: If supertankers could talk, they might sound like this. This track is equal parts relentless and hypnotic- and threatens to pulverize listeners the first chance it gets.”
Steve Goldberg - Earworms and Song Loops:
Lola Young - Wish You Were Dead: "Lola Young has gotten big this year, and although I like many songs from her This Wasn't Meant For You Anyway album, none of the songs blow me away like the frenetic, powerful "Wish You Were Dead." Makes me glad I'm not in my 20s anymore, but glad great music is being made by those who are!"
Matt Madurski - Chart Chat:
“The Beaches - Edge of the Earth: The fourth single off their "Blame My Ex" album, "Edge of the Earth" is a solid pop-punk confection from a pretty great all-female lineup. The refrain is an infectious hook, and the wall of sound that permeates the track is worthy of repeat listens.”
Angela Yokoe: Oblivion – SYML (epic)
Christopher Bradley - Daydreamin' 'Bout the Way Things Sometimes Are
Mister Los Angeles by Dawes: “A return to form for the two Goldsmith brothers. They lost half their band, but maybe that’s what they needed to hunker down and write some songs reminiscent of their humble start.”
Matt Fish - Best Music of All Time:
"Hear Me Cry" by Ezra Collective—my favorite cut of a near-miss for my best album pick of 2024. If there's one artist off this shortlist I wish more people knew about, it's them.”
Mark Edward Randall - Musings of a Broken Record:
U Should Not Be Doing That- Amyl and the Sniffers
"I just really like this. I was into Peaches and Karen O. twenty years ago and it's great to see someone following in their footsteps"
What is your number 6 song of 2024?!
FtP's 2010s output was terrific. "Helena Beat" and "Sit Next To Me" are two of my favorites of that decade. I did listen to "Lost In Space" a bit this year and if the countdown extended to 20, it'd definitely be on my list as well. Solid pick!
Calling You Out - Charley Bliss. I really rate the album Forever as a whole but this is definitely the stand out track for me.
