My Number 8 song of 2024 is…
Confide in Me – Melissa Manchester
I’ve been a big fan of Manchester’s since the 1970s so I’m always thrilled when she releases something new. Earlier this year, she finally released the album she had been working on since the pandemic in which she re-made some of her most famous songs. Confide in Me is one that she had never recorded before. What a treat it is! The production and arrangement are both quite elegant and Manchester’s voice still sounds as powerful as ever. I also like the sentiment. I love it when people confide in me – as long as their side doesn’t become the sole focus of our relationship! The video for the song is also beautiful and romantic.
Number 8 songs from other contributors:
Kevin Alexander - On Repeat Records:
“Thurston Moore ft. Laetitia Sadier - Sans Limites: Lush and spare all at once and absolutely gorgeous. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this pairing. It's not the last time I've been proven wrong. 11/10. No notes.”
Steve Goldberg - Earworms and Song Loops:
“Nada Surf - In Front of Me Now”
Matt Madurski - Chart Chat:
“Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso: This was one of the two "songs of the summer" at my house. "Espresso" was in heavy rotation during summer pool parties and it just grew on me because of that. The refrain just buries itself deep in the pleasure centers of my brain.”
Angela Yokoe: I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All – Father John Misty (disco existentialism)
Christopher Bradley - Daydreamin' 'Bout the Way Things Sometimes Are:
Right Back to It by Waxahatchee: “This song is so great to listen to while walking or running. It gives you a kind of motivational Zen.Kate Crutchfield’s period of songwriting since like 2019 has been nothing short of top notch.”
Matt Fish - Best Music of All Time
What is your Number 8 song from 2024?!
"The Invisible Man" by Maruja—as finely-tuned an underground alt-rock epic as you'll find in 2024.”
Mark Edward Randall - Musings of a Broken Record:
#8 "Houdini" by Dua Lipa "I didn't follow a lot of newer music this year. One thing I like so much about Substack is that I am slowly discovering newer music again. One of the few songs that did cross my radar before I started Musings last May was "Houdini" by Dua Lipa"
Ha - forgot to write a little blurb about Nada Surf, but Kevin did a great job of that in his top 5 albums of the year post. I think he even referenced this song. I'll send you my next one now before I forget!:) Happy holidaze, Dan!
I had no idea Melissa Manchester was still recording!
Also, I’m pretty sure I was the last person on the planet to hear “Espresso.” The first time was only a few weeks ago…and it promptly got stuck in my head.
