Kicking it off with the song that just missed my Top Ten:
Runner Up: Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come – The Wombats
This one came close. The Wombats previously made my Top Ten twice in 2022. This song is from an upcoming album to be released in 2025. It has some of the best pointed lyrics I’ve heard in a while:
“Sorry I'm late, I didn't want to come
It's not that I hate you, I just hate everyone
I don't want to socialise unless I'm getting numb
Sorry I'm late, I didn't want to come”
These lyrics come eerily close to how I’ve felt many times in my life. But my favorite line may be:
“I'm only hearing every other word
Your life story's not of my concern
How 'bout we talk about me now?
How 'bout you let me go free now?”
Oh, how many times have I felt the same way! I am a good listener and, as I will mention in another song later, I enjoy hearing what is going on with other people. BUT, balance and reciprocity are needed! This is probably the big reason why I decided to publish my own life story on Substack this year. I wanted people to hear me. Some chose not to even bother with it, which is their choice but I’m grateful for those who do.
My only problem with the song is that I DON’T hate everyone! I appreciate people who are loving, forgiving, open, honest, and genuine. So, while I can completely understand the sentiment in this song, it just misses my Top Ten because it goes a step further than I ever would emotionally.
Others contributing their runner up favorites:
Kevin Alexander from On Repeat Records:
“Sierra Ferrell- Dollar Bill Bar: One of these songs is not like the others. I don't know what drew me to this record- Americana's not usually my thing- but I couldn't get enough. And the way Ferrell bends the lyrics to suit her will? Icing on the cake.”
Mark Edward Randall - Musings of a Broken Record:
"Lights Camera Action" by Kylie Minogue. Kylie has always been hit or miss for me but when she's good, she's good. I really liked "Padam Padam" and this is another one in a similar vein. It just barely misses though because it lacks the magic Padam had but it's still catchy and I still played it a bit"
Matt Madurski from Chart Chat:
Honorable Mentions: Balu Brigada - So Cold
Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen - I Had Some Help
Dua Lipa - Illusion
Eminem - Houdini
Angela Yokoe: Now and Then (In Remembrance of) - Samara Joy -”loss, respect and memory.”
