Since we are now more than halfway through the month of January and I finished my Top Ten memoir a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was time to begin a new journey for 2025.
Wow! I never in a million years thought anyone else would know about, much less recommend “Somebody’s Knockin’”! I have had Terry Gibb’s (sp?) original version on one of my playlists for at least 3 - 4 years. Don’t recall where I found it originally. The cover version you shared is terrific and it’s going on a different playlist.
Heading back to your list to hear the other goodies you’ve shared. Look forward to what you find in 2025!
(Have you heard of Linus of Hollywood? He’s a recent discovery although much of his “pop” music was released in the mid-aughts. I read that he now works on commercial projects (films, video games, etc).
Great to hear you like "Somebody's Knockin'!" I always loved the original version so it was great to hear a new take on it. I don't know Linus of Hollywood but he (they?) do sound like an artist I might be into. Will check out more of their music. Thanks for reading and listening!
Are you able/willing to create a Spotify/Apple list of your new music songs like you did for your memoir. I’m afraid I fall into Rowell’s fallback category, mainly because Spotify’s Release Radar and Discover Weekly pick really bad options for me. Just because I liked a couple of Dolly Parton’s rock and roll cover songs, does not mean I want my Thursday Daylist to be “Canadian Bluegrass Afternoon”. I thought listening to your top 10 playlists would help my algorithm but so far it has not. Listening to last year’s Eurovision playlist had zero effect, too. It’s almost as bad as the Pandora Days when, if you did not HIGHLY curate your station, every station turned into a Taylor Swift Radio.
Rowell’s book sounds intriguing. Will look for it as an ebook!
As others have noted, I like this new direction. I was really bummed when your top ten memoir caught up to you in real time.
I will try to put together a playlist later this week when I post #2. I'll also be posting a teaching memoir beginning later this week. More stories to tell!
Excited for this new direction, Dan! Also, this means I have a chance to finish reading the memoir. I'm glad I could point you to Freak Slug and Consumables, more to come every Friday and beyond!
"I am still avoiding Chicago winters by remaining in Palm Springs, California for a few months."
Can confirm that this is a brilliant move. On the off-chance you feel homesick, pull up next week's temps.
Weather aside, I'm loving this idea/direction (and thank you for the shoutout!), and am already excited to see where you take us. My current obsession is the new instrumental track "State of Motion" by Immersion & SUSS. Immersion is Colin Newman from Wire and Malka Spigel. It's off their upcoming record, and it's gorgeous.
I wondered what you would be doing next following your memoir series. I'm so glad we'll still get to follow your life, as you live it, along with the music you discover.
Substack is where I'm discovering so much new music and from many different genres. I thought rock 'n' roll was mostly over, and how wrong I was. So much coming out all the time in the US and overseas, with writers on here sharing it. You'll be another great source for new tunes.
Thanks Ellen. I've always thought more people would listen to new music if they knew where to find it. I hope I can help! I still get very excited by so much of the new music I hear!

Thanks Jeremy! Yes, I'm digging those new tracks and look forward to hearing more!

Cool tune! I've added it to my "need to develop it more" instrumentals list!
I am a Feral Codger who loves all music, and like this new idea of yours.

For some reason I'm not able to open your link Jon. Is this a public list?
Yes it is public
