Would be curious to see the original. It has to make more logical sense than this one. While you may be enjoying various scenes and performers, there are too many, wait…what? moments.
I'll stick with Preminger. His films didn't always work, and he was an absolute tyrant directing on his sets, but he was far more competent as a director than most working today.
Can't imagine why they would remake this. Re-saw the original last year and it holds up quite well, and hard to imagine anyone but Jean Seberg as Cecile or David Niven as Raymond.

I've not seen that version but I'm guessing it works better than this one did.
